COPD - Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Equine Conditions and Responses Home
These conditions are a disease of the small airways in the lungs caused by an allergic reaction to
fungal spores,
pollen dust etc once allergic the effected horses will react to triggers
throughout there lives.
COPD can be the cause of coughing and nasal discharge in stabled horses. In bad cases the horse has to make
a conscious effort to breathe out which can easily be observed by watching the sides of the horse.
Good management is paramount to helping a horse with COPD. The stable
environment must be as dust free and well ventilated
as possible. All feed fodder and bedding must be good quality and
correctly stored. The horse must be kept to a level of fitness
so that they don't have to blow ( get puffed out ) they must be kept to a healthy weight and not allowed to get fat, again helping to prevent
straining and stressing to breathe.
Equine Bowen Therapy and the
treatment of COPD - RAO
Equine Bowen Therapy is extremely useful as a support to these cases.
Along with procedures to maximise the systems functions
and promote body rebalancing, Bowen has a specific respiratory procedure aimed to help maximize muscle and lung
function. Lymphatic Drainage
is also a key to clearing related congestion.
